Prepare to be transported back in time as The Improvised Shakespeare Company takes the stage. They’re turning one audience suggestion (a title for a play that has yet to be written) into a spontaneous Shakespearean masterpiece! It’s like witnessing the magic of the Bard unfold right before your eyes, but with a unique twist. Nothing has been planned, rehearsed, or written. And if you’re wondering where the story is headed, so are they!

These improv maestros have brushed up on their “thee’s” and “thou’s” to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy, all in the language and themes of William Shakespeare. From the prologue to the epilogue, this talented group of Shakespearean improvisers maintains a sense of play as they weave together characters and plots that (most of the time) feel remarkably faithful to the great bard himself.

The Bard might not have envisioned wrapping up his little-known tragedy “All Is True” with a bloodbath involving a pack of feral orphans. But hey, cut them some slack – writing a completely new play every night is no easy feat, even for Shakespeare!

So, prepare yourselves to laugh, marvel, and maybe even shed a tear as The Improvised Shakespeare Company creates a theatrical experience like no other. It’s Shakespeare as you’ve never seen him before. Spontaneous, unpredictable, and utterly hilarious!

Garner Galleria Theatre Improvised Shakespeare

At this show, there is no set to speak of. Audiences will find three sides of the stage are lined with long, black velvet drapes. There are three metal chairs on the plain black stage. To make it more descriptive, it’s the kind you find in your doctor’s office, with blue seats and back cushions. Other than the chairs, there are no props – not that you can see. Dozens are visualized throughout the performance via gestures and references.

The Improvised Shakespeare Company does a successful job at blending everything into a one-of-a-kind performance. Really, there’s no way you’ll find another show just like this! There are high chances you’ll find instances where a cast member would deliver an original bit of prose… only to be interrupted by another cast member – riffing off of something they had heard to take the story in an entirely new direction. It’s truly a once in a lifetime experience of thrills and laughs!

“So funny and clever! Excellent performances and a fantastic ensemble.” – Mix Up Theatre

“Quick witted, inexhaustible and absolutely hysterical.” – London Theatre Review

“A great night out!” – Broadway World

In a review by Wendi Winters from DC Theatre Arts, she highlighted how each and every show would be unique. She was thrilled by the cast and how well they handled, well, improvisation! She said, “The best way to explain the show – which put me in a terrific mood after fighting two hours of traffic to get there – is to imagine that the entire body of Shakespeare’s work has been put into a shredder along with a hardcover version of an 8th grade grammar book, and a compendium of Second City’s best comedy bits. As the show started, the cast hit the shred button, grabbed a metaphorical handful and took their places on stage.” She also added, “When was the last time you hear the phrase “aspirant prefix”? Or, heard a Shakespearean-toned thespian segue into last week’s street jive talk? The Improvised Shakespeare Company blends all of this and more into a one-of-a-kind performance.”

“When a Shakespeare inspired improv comedy company was coming to town, I knew I had to be in the room.” – BroadwayWorld
